SLF Finals Day update

David Barnes
From Gill Peachey...

To All SLF Club Delegates & Finals Day Coordinators:
(copied to SLF Committee & Steve Wilbur)

With the 'Beast from the East' cancelling the Delegates Meeting at the beginning of the month, I thought it would be helpful to update clubs on a number of things. I do hope you coped with the two spells of freezing weather and managed to make use of the photographic opportunities the conditions provided.

Plate Finals

We send congratulations to our Plate Trophy Winners Mitcham CC (colour prints), Old Coulsdon CC (monochrome prints) & South London PS (PDIs). It's good to see Mitcham & South London getting their names on trophies. The Plate Final was an excellent evening & the silverware will be presented to you at Finals Day.

Finals Day Preparations

The cold weather has caused us a number of problems.

As you know, we had to extend the deadline for delivery of work by a week (due to cancelling the Delegates meeting). We are extremely grateful to Jack Bates for taking delivery of all the print boxes and trophies and I'd like to thank all clubs for getting their work in by the new deadline.

As well as later delivery of work than anticipated, we also had to contend with a big increase in the number of entries to the Open competitions this year - 162 colour prints; 132 monochrome prints; 188 PDIs (up from 132, 108 & 142 respectively last year)*. We managed to claw back a couple of days when booking the work in and ended up only 5 days behind our original schedule.

However, 'The Beast' hadn't finished with us yet! Rachael Talibart is a very busy lady and the weather delay meant we missed our narrow window of opportunity for her to pre-judge our work. Sadly, she won't be judging at Finals Day this year.

Finding a replacement judge at this late stage is not easy, but I'm pleased to announce that David Eastley LRPS has stepped up to the plate. We look forward to seeing him on 21st April.

* Note: We have more prints in the Open Competitions than we can display on the day. We will ensure that everyone has at least one print on display in the exhibition and the digital files of other entries will be put into a slideshow so they can be enjoyed by everyone

Finals Day - 21st April

This will be held at St. John's Church, Eden Park Av., Beckenham BR3 3JN. Doors open at 1pm for the exhibition and the main event starts at 2pm. Tickets cost £5 (available on the door). Our judges are Don Morley, David Eastley LRPS and Jay Charnock FRPS and they will be judging the inter-club finals, certificate winners and open competitions. Please encourage your members to come along for an excellent afternoon of photography.

Finals Day Help

The committee put many hours into organising this event before the actual day, but we can't get everything set up by 1pm on 21st April without your help!
We need help at the hall from 10am onwards, please. As all clubs have work in Finals Day competitions, it would be good to have a volunteer from every club.
We will need help to take everything down at the end of the event too.

If you have members who are able to help out, please let me know.

Wishing you all a good Bank Holiday weekend - let's hope the Beast doesn't return again!

Re: SLF Finals Day update

OPS Notices
Administrator
Today a delegation from the OPS attended the SLF finals day at Beckenham CC. We were up against the host in the Mono Print final.

Scoring went neck and neck until the latter part of the judging when Beckenham ended up with 4 held and the OPS only 2. Even so the final score resulted in a dead heat and a tie break was triggered.

Beckenham got the nod and won what was the closest competition of the afternoon.

As runners up we were awarded the Victis Honos Cup.

We have won this cup on 5 previous occasions, 1975-6, 1980-1, 1994-5, 1995-6 and 2009.

Elsewhere images by Peter Humphrey FRPS, Richard Waterman and George Knowles-Bacon were selected for comments by the judges. Apologies if I missed anyone.

The SLF have posted the results of the Finals Day on their website.

They have also included slide shows of all the entries to the finals competitions together with commented images for the open competitions.

Some of you may be able to find your images if you hunt around.

Thanks Chris. It’s nice to see they have now include our Mono Prints. They only loaded the winning images from Beckenham before.
