To me a picture should always show you something you missed last time you looked. A lot of pictures are hung on a wall to fill a space, and are never looked at, in passing, again. a picture on the wall should keep catching your eye, it should contain something that makes you think, and allows you to enjoy.
So what if a bit of shading is off or overlaps, or if there are not enough shades of black to white, it is the whole area as one that should keep attracting your attention. we have different tastes, but judges are so inward looking, their opinions vary so much on a single picture, they stick to a set of rules, that it does not really mean anything if they like it or not, as long as you do, although nice if other people like it too.
