Via John Nathan who gave us a talk on 28th February.
"After I gave your club a talk recently, I asked that my fee be given as a donation to the Galapagos Conservation Trust, which is doing important work to protect this unique place. I thought you would be interested to read and perhaps pass on to your members the reply I received from the Trust, as below. When I was there, eighteen years ago, the giant tortoises were so rare that we were not allowed to see them in the wild, only in the Charles Darwin research station. So donations such as yours have helped preserve the wildlife, and are greatly appreciated -
On behalf of the Galapagos Conservation Trust, I would like to extend our most grateful thanks for the donation of £323.40 towards conservation of the islands raised through the various talks you have recently given. Please also pass on our thanks to all of the individuals and clubs that donated.
This year there are many exciting projects that will benefit from your kind support, including a multi-institutional captive breeding programme for the critically endangered mangrove finch which is under threat from the introduced parasitic fly Philornis downsi. We are also continuing our support for the Galapagos Tortoise Movement Ecology Programme. This vital project tracks adult and hatching tortoises to improve our understanding of the impact of environmental changes on the iconic Galapagos giant tortoise. The project also monitors nest sites for risk of flooding, as well as measuring the mortality rate of the hatchlings within their first few months to try to find out more about the early years of a tortoise’s life.
Your donation will also support a number of important marine projects such as the ongoing Galapagos Whale Shark Project. By tagging individual sharks, the team are aiming to understand more about the life cycle of these enigmatic species and the importance of the Galapagos Marine Reserve for their global populations.
Thankyou very much again for your support. Should you ever wish to meet to discuss any of these projects further, please do not hesitate to contact me,
Yours,
John Nathan."
