Summer challenge 2022 topics

Dear Member,

Every summer, come rain or shine, we provide you with a challenge or two to help sharpen your observational skills. As in previous years, we have four topics to challenge you. Previously, we have constrained you a little by setting specific topics per month, let's be creative, if you happen to spot all 4 topics on one outing, rejoice and take photos!

This year's topics are:

1. Letters in everyday objects that spell 'Orpington'
Do we need to say anymore on this?
 Be creative, but have fun.

2. A different perspective
A photographers job is to capture the world. To take that shot that someone else may not have, and to show everyone the beauty that they might otherwise not have seen. For this challenge is to capture the world from a different perspective than you might normally look at. In photography, perspective often refers to the relationship between the viewer and the objects in your photo. Look at an object or a place, and think how to capture it from a perspective that is different than the normal way the viewer would see it.

3. Negative Space
Negative space is actually a very positive thing!  Negative space refers to the space around your subject, and when done right, can actually both attract attention to your subject and it's spacious surroundings!

Using negative space will yield a great "minimalism" approach; this of the old adage "less is more". Take out all distraction. Keep your whole frame clean of "clutter".

This is also a great time for asymmetry to play more of a part in your composition. Look out for clean backgrounds like walls or an overcast sky. Negative space need not mean plain and bland backgrounds - texture and contrasting colours can also be used to play a part in "framing" your subject effectively.

4. Square
Chocolate squares and dice, quilting fat quarters and windows and lift buttons. Maybe because it is so solid and symmetrical, but it is definitely a shape that one sees everywhere in various sizes and flavours.

You can photograph square objects (and then keep noticing squares for the next two months!) or you can play a bit more with this theme. You can take photos of  life in the village square, people doing a square dance,  it is is hip to be square!

For the first meeting of the new season on September 13th, provide at least one photo on each of these topics. Talk about what inspired you and why you took it. You may make a collage if you so wish.
