A discussion group meeting was held last night at Westcombe Park Rugby Club with 9 members attending.  The club room has been re-painted and the white walls were conducive to an evening of practical photography tips. We dispensed with the need for a projector screen and just used the white wall.

First up was David Barnes with his take on street photography.  The main message was not to ask to take a picture, but snap the action as it occurs.  Two techniques were explained: Find a good spot to wait and see what happens or follow a demonstration and get up close to the action.

Next was Neil Hobday demonstrating how to use off-camera flash and how to use a light meter to find the correct camera settings to balance the ambient light and the flash itself.  Malcolm Ming modelled for a practical demonstration.  Neil also brought along his extensive flash modifier kit including filters, soft boxes, snoods and grids.

Finally, Peter Humphrey explained how to calibrate your monitor and the profiling required for printing via both Lightroom and Photoshop. He showed why it is important to select both the printer and the paper type being used.  He also demonstrated how to lighten and darken various areas of an image using 'dodge and burn' layers in Photoshop and the adjustment brush in Lightroom.

Everyone agreed it was a very useful evening and are looking forward to our next meet in the new year.

Alan Graham

Thanks for that Chris, sorry I missed it but I did have a very constructive course on low light shooting in London.
