NOTES FROM TONIGHTS TRAINING / DISCUSSION SESSION ON POST PROCESSING IN LR

1/ strongly recommend you use RAW files that allow more control over the image for contrast and exposure adjusting

2/ before importing RAW images, suggest you check quality of images Focus before trying to import as most controls can be adjusted within RAW except for Focus.

3/ during import give image(s) keywords for ease of future searches, once imported then backup onto external hard drive instead of internal due due to size of files when saved in RAW format - in addition, in case of fire or theft its recommended you back up files remotely using something like a Cloud based systems. Eg Backblaze based in LA.

4/ as RAW files hold the maximum amount of data but minimal adjustment within camera (unlike JPGs) it's important to adjust these images in post processing with software such as LR6 or similar.

5/ by exposing in camera to the furthest point right of the histogram the maximum amount of data will be held in the RAW file allowing more control with contrast and exposure once imported

6/ the sliders in the Develop Section will allow you to bring out this information mainly from reducing highlight slider to the left until any blowouts are reduced and then increasing shadow slider to bring out any dark areas that are underexposed

7/ other sliders commonly used include whites and blacks plus contrast depending upon the image and finally Clarity and Vibrance slightly to the right.

8/ another method of bringing out depth and giving a 3D effect would be "Camera Calibration" section using the blue primary slider to the right increases the depth of background and contrasts overall plus red and brown primary sliders increase foreground texture and contrast. This is a relatively new concept and should be used on images with maximum exposure just before blowouts are seen (preferably on landscape photos)

9/ you may only need to use PS for layers, cloning plus masking when preparing composite images or adding filters and textures but in most scenarios LR will suffice.

10/ finally, you will find the opportunity to be more creative when using external plug ins from software such as Googles NIK colour and mono Efex pro plus TOPAZ Adjust / Simplify / Remask to name a few.
